How to Clean Windows from Inside Without Streaks
Interior windows streak for predictable reasons. Here’s the method that eliminates them — including the mistakes most people make.
Interior window cleaning is one of those tasks that seems simple but consistently produces frustrating results — streaks, smears, and lint that appear as soon as the light hits the glass from a different angle. The causes are almost always the same three things: wrong product, wrong tool, or working in direct sun.
The Three Streak Causes
Wrong Product
Products with ammonia or heavy surfactants leave a residue film on glass that shows as haze in certain light.
Wrong Tool
Paper towels leave lint. Old rags deposit their own residue. Only clean microfiber or a quality rubber squeegee produces streak-free results.
Direct Sun
Cleaning solution dries faster than you can work in direct sunlight — leaving smear marks before you can buff them out.
The Right Method
Work on overcast days or rooms not in direct sunlight. Apply a small amount of ammonia-free glass cleaner to a clean microfiber cloth — not directly to the glass. Work in overlapping circular motions, then finish with straight strokes in one direction. Buff dry immediately with a second dry microfiber before the solution dries.
For large glass panels — floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors common in Naples homes — a squeegee produces better results than microfiber. Apply solution with an applicator, squeegee top to bottom in overlapping passes, wipe the blade between each pass, and detail the edges with a dry microfiber.
