How to Clean Double-Hung Windows — Naples FL Guide

Double-hung windows tilt in for a reason — but most Naples homeowners don’t use that feature correctly. Here’s the full method.

Double-hung windows are the most common window style in Naples residential homes. Both the upper and lower sashes can open and tilt inward on most modern double-hung units, which makes interior cleaning easier than fixed-frame windows. Here’s how to use that feature correctly and get truly clean glass on both sides.

Using the Tilt-In Feature

Most double-hung windows tilt inward by pressing the tilt latches on either side of the sash and pulling the top of the sash toward you. The lower sash tilts in from the bottom; the upper sash tilts in from the top after lowering it. This allows you to clean both sides of the glass from inside the home without using a ladder.

Important: never force the tilt mechanism. If a sash resists, check that the window is fully lowered or raised to the correct position before applying pressure to the latch. Forcing a tilted sash can break the pivot bar mechanism.

The Cleaning Sequence for Double-Hung Windows

  • Clean tracks and sills before tilting — debris in the channel falls onto tilted glass
  • Tilt lower sash in, clean the exterior face of the lower sash from inside
  • Return lower sash to position, tilt upper sash in, clean its exterior face
  • Clean interior surfaces of both sashes with standard interior technique
  • Wipe all track channels and sill areas last

Naples-Specific Issues with Double-Hung Windows

The horizontal track channels on double-hung windows collect more salt and mineral buildup than any other window type in Naples. Salt-laden air moves horizontally and deposits directly into the open channel every time the window is open. Clean track channels every professional visit — neglected channels corrode aluminum and cause the sash to bind, eventually requiring replacement hardware.
