Run a dry finger across the glass. A white powdery residue that comes off on your finger is salt. A gritty surface that doesn’t wipe off easily is mineral deposit. A hazy film that comes off with a microfiber is organic buildup. Each requires a different treatment.

Step 2 — Treat Mineral Deposits First

Never scrub over mineral deposits. Apply a diluted acid-based mineral remover — CLR, Bar Keepers Friend paste, or a professional-grade mineral remover — to the affected area. Allow it to dwell for 1–3 minutes, then gently agitate with a non-abrasive pad. Rinse thoroughly. This must happen before any standard cleaning.

Step 3 — Standard Clean with Professional Solution

After mineral treatment, apply a pH-neutral cleaning solution and agitate gently with a soft applicator. The mineral treatment will have cleared the hard deposits — the cleaning solution now addresses salt and organic film effectively.

Step 4 — Final Rinse with Purified Water

Always finish with purified or deionized water. Rinsing with tap water after all this work deposits new minerals as it dries. Distilled water from a store is acceptable for a DIY final rinse.

When to Call a Professional

If the glass has been neglected for more than a year and the surface feels rough even after mineral treatment, professional polishing compound may be needed. At that stage, etching has begun — the minerals have started to chemically alter the glass surface itself. This is recoverable by professionals in most cases but requires specialty equipment.
