Paper Towels for Window Cleaning — Why They Leave Streaks and What to Use Instead
Paper towels are the most common cause of streaked windows after cleaning. Here’s the science and the fix.
Almost every DIY window cleaning attempt in Naples involves paper towels. They’re convenient, disposable, and seem like they should work fine on glass. The problem is that paper towels are not designed for glass — and their limitations show up immediately in streaked, lint-covered windows.
Why Paper Towels Streak
Paper towels are made from wood pulp fibers. Those fibers shed — invisibly — onto glass as you wipe. Under direct sunlight or at certain viewing angles, that lint becomes highly visible. Paper towels also absorb liquid unevenly, which means some areas get more cleaning solution than others, creating uneven application and drying patterns that appear as streaks.
Premium paper towels improve somewhat on this — but they’re still paper, and paper still sheds on glass. The texture also lacks the polishing action that microfiber provides.
What to Use Instead
Microfiber Cloths
The best option for interior glass. Use one damp cloth to apply and clean, and a second dry cloth to buff. Replace when they stop absorbing well.
Rubber Squeegee
The professional standard for large glass surfaces. Produces consistently streak-free results when used with proper technique.
One exception: some newspaper does work reasonably well on glass — the ink acts as a mild cleaning agent and the paper is dense enough not to shed as badly. But it’s inconsistent and messy. Microfiber is more reliable and reusable.
